He removed to Peterborough about 1780, from Worcester, and first located on the Dunbar place, afterwards removed to what was called the Mitchell place, just south of the Faxon farm, and then to the place where the family now live. This place was probably occupired about 1783. He d. April 19, 1850, ae. 96. She d. May 19, 1849, ae. 97. Children: 1. Mercy, b. Oct 18, 1782; m. Frederick Poor. She d. Feb 13, 1875 ae 93 yrs, 3 mos. 2. +John, b. March 31, 1783; m. Betsey Washburn 3. Jonas, b. Aug 12, 1787; m. Hannah Gates; d. Feb 23, 1831 ae. 45, c. 4. Martha, b. June 25, 1789; m. Thomas Hadley. 5. JOHN BARBER, son of Silas & Prudence (Rice) Barber, settled in the northwest corner of the town, until a few years before his death, when he removed to the village. He m. Betsey Washburn, of Hancock, b. March 27, 1792. He d. Dec. 22, 1848, ae 65. She d. in LeRoy, Barton Co. MO, Aug. 12, 1872, ae 80 yrs, 4 months. Children: 1. +John W., b. Nov 1, 1810; m1st, Elmina D. Davis; m 2nd, Eliza Carley; m3rd, Mrs. Penelope Holden. 2. Silas, b. Nov 27, 1811; d. Aug 22, 1813, ae 1 yr 8 mos. 3. Elizabeth, b. April 21, 1816; m. George Haywood Hancock. Two ch. 4. Prudence, b. May 17, 1818; m. Rev. John Jones; resided LeRoy, Barton Co., MO. One ch. Silas Barber, son of Silas & Prudence (Rice) Barber, settled on the homestead, and now lives there. He m. Lydia Washburn. Children: 1. Lydia Ann, b. Dec. 18, 1820; m. A.C. Blodgett. She d. Nov 6, 1843, ae 22. One ch., John H. Blodgett, b. Nov 6, 1842. M.D., University VT, 1866, now a physician in Concord N.H. A.C. Blodgett d. Sept 23, 1858, ae 48. 2. William, b. March 27, 1824; d. --, 1825, ae 1. 3. +Charles, b. Sept 22 1826; m. Abby A. Parker 4. Louisa, b. Dec 19, 1830; m. 1849, Jones Dodge; ch., Ella A., b. March 1851; Albert J. b Aug 1857. John W. Barber, son of John & Betsey (Washburn) Barber, b. Nov 1, 1810; m1st, Elmina D. Davis of Hancock who d. July 30, 1846, ae 34 yrs 3 months. He m 2nd, Eliza Carley, dau of Jabez Carley, who d. at Grasshopper Falls, Jefferson Co., Kansas, March 10, 1862, ae. 34; He m3rd, Mrs. Penelope Holden, of Grasshopper Falls. Mr. Barber removed from Peterborough NH to Grasshopper Falls in March 1855, where he now resides, engaged in farming. Five ch by 1st wife, and three by 2nd wife. Children of John W. & Elmina D. (Davis) Barber: 1. Frances Elmina, b. Nov 7, 1838; d. Dec 29, 1844, ae 6. 2. Marietta L., b. Dec 22, 1840; m. Sidney J. Squiers; resided Grasshopper Falls KS 3. Albert D., b. Oct 6, 1842; d. in Kansas, March 10, 1862, age 19 yrs 5 months. 4. Ellen Maria, b. Sept 26, 1844; m. Nov 26, 1863, Riley B. Hatch, a native of Williamstown VT. He was educated at Middlebury College in class of 1857 and came to town in 1859 to take charge of the academy. He afterwards studied law and commenced the practice in town. He was appointed Treasurer of the Peterborough Savings Bank in 1864, which office he held until 1873. He represented the town in the Legislature in 1868-9. He first started the business of Fire and Life Insurance in town in March 1863, and built up a large and successful agency here for numerous insurance companies. He still resides in town. Children: Charles A., b. July 25, 1856; Ida Frances, b. Nov 1, 1866; Ellen Maria, b. April 20, 1868; George Ernest, b. Jan 22, 1870, d. Nov 22, 1870 ae 10 mos. 5. James D. b. July 21, 1846; d. Aug 25, 1846 ae 1 mo. 4 days. Children of John W. & Eliza (Carley) Barber: 6. Francis W., b May 13, 1851, d. Aug 23, 1852 ae 1 yr 3 months 7. Frances E. b. Nov 17, 1852; m. Henry James; resided Barton County MO 8. Alfred C. b. July 3, 1861; d. July 22, 1862, ae 1 yr. CHARLES BARBER, son of Silas & Lydia (Washburn) Barber, was born Sept 22 1826; m. Abby A. Parker. He settled on the homestead, as his father did before him. Selectman 1869-1871. Children: 1. Gilbert A., b. May 2, 1856 2. Charles P. b. Oct 28, 1858; d. March 21, 1866, ae 7 yrs 3. Nellie, twin, b.
