61. Clarence Leroy WEBSTER

BURIAL: Newspaper clipping, obituary: "Clarence L. Webster, 87, formerly of Depot Street, died Sunday night at the Odd Fellows Home in Concord after a long illness.  Born in Canisteo NY he lived in Merrimack for more than 70 years.  He was the station agent and telegraph operator for the Boston and Maine Railroad, retiring after 54 years of services.  He was a 64 year member and past noble grand of Souhegan Lodge, 100F, and its secretary for more than 50 years.  He was a member of the Puritan Rebekah Lodge and Narraganset Grange of Bedford.  He attended the First Congregational Church in Merrimack.  Members of thefamily include a son, Berwin H. Webster of Manchester; a daughter, Mrs. Anna W. Watkins of Merrimack; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces,nephews and cousins.  Services will be conducted at the George R. Rivet Funeral Home, Main Street, Wednesday at 2 p.m. Burial in Last Rest Cemetery.  Friendsmay call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.  Souhegan Lodge, 100F will conduct a memorial service today at 7:30 pm at the funeral home." EMPLOYMENT: Station Agent and Telegraph Operator for the B&M Railroad - retired after 54 years [Obituary, The Manchester Union Leader]; his granddaughter Janice Brown has the cap that he wore, along with a photograph of him standing in front of the Reeds Ferry station in his uniform.

BIOGRAPHY: According to his grand-daughter, Janice M. (Webster) Whittaker, Clarence L. Webster left home around the age of 13-14 years (basically his father told him to leave).  He went to Amherst MA where he attended a telegraph operators school (and said the students at the college there were mean to him).  He apparently lived in an outlying town, because he stated that he walked between two towns with a lantern.  His first assignment as a telegraph operator was in Amherst MA.  Later he became the telegraph operator (and station agent) in Merrimack NH (Reeds Ferry station) and that is probably where he met (and married) Mattie Kilborn.

BIOGRAPHY: After leaving home, he only visited his father, Isaac F. Webster once, and was also estranged from his brother Jesse for many years.  In Jesse's old age, following the suicide of his [Jesse's] wife, Jesse went to live with Clarence Webster.

BIOGRAPHY: Clarence Webster had a great knowledge of the processing of cheese.  Reportedly a family member (in his early years) made and sold cheese.


Mattie Almira KILBORN

EMPLOYMENT: Teacher in Bennington and Merrimack schools.  Taught English to newly arrived immigrants at the Institute of Arts and Sciences (in Manchester NH).

MEDICAL: Metastatic Carcinoma of Lungs -- Diabetic [from Death Certificate]

RELIGION: Attended Merrimack Congregational Church [from obituary]

BIOGRAPHY: From Mattie (Kilborn) Webster's granddaughter, Janice M. (Webster) Whittaker: Mattie left home around the age of 12 to live on the Frett's Farm in Merrimack New Hampshire.  Her father married one of the Fretts women in the household.  Her new step-mother was mean to her, and would lock her in the closet.  The Fretts family made hats.


BIOGRAPHY: REEDSFERRY - Mrs. Mattie Almira (Kilborn) Webster,79, of Pleasant Street, died yesterday morning at her home after a long illness.  Born in Webster, she lived most of her life in Reeds Ferry.

BIOGRAPHY: She was a member of the Merrimack Congregational Church, was active in the church choir for many years, and was a member of the Missionary Society and the Ladies Aid Society of the church.
Mrs. Webster was a member of Puritan Rebekah Lodge and Narragansett Grange of Bedford.  She was the first president and one of the founders of the Reeds Ferry Womens Club, and was a prize winner in rug hooking.  She compiled and narrated the history of the town during the Bicentennial celebration. BURIAL: Funeral Services will be conducted at the Merrimack Congregational Church Wednesday afternoon.  A Rebehak service will be conducted Tuesday evening at the George R. Rivet Funeral Home, Merrimack.  Burial will be in the Last Rest Cemetery, Merrimack.

RESOURCES: Members of the family include her husband, Clarence L. Webster; a son, Berwin H. Webster of Manchester; a daughter, Mrs. Anna W. RESIDENCE(S): Raised in Boscawen, New Hampshire area.  Moved to Merrimack around the time of her marriage to Clarence L. Webster and lived there until her death.  She stated that Tashua Tudor (the artist) lived in the Kilborn House (where her uncle was living while she was growing up) in the Boscawen NH area.  She sent several cards to Mary Manning Webster with reproductions of artwork showing the inside of that home.

DEATH: Died at her home on the corner of Pleasant St./Depot St. in Merrimack NH.

EDUCATION: Mattie Kilborn attended McGraw Institute (a college for teachers) in Merrimack NH.

74. Vance Clifton WEBSTER

Vance WEBSTER, son of Almon & Emma Webster, b 25 May 1895, died 19 Sept. 1943

BURIAL: Harrison Valley, Pa., Sept. 21 -- Vance C. WEBSTER of Mills, died in a hospital in Gowanda Sunday the result of an automobile accident.
Mr. WEBSTER was born at Mills, Pa., the son of Almond and Emma (GROVER) WEBSTER. November 24, 1917 he was married to Miss Hazel HAMILTON at Bingham, Pa. Survivors are his widow, a son Stanley, and father at Mills and a brother Clayton of Bingham, Mr. WEBSTER was a member of the Ulysses Grange and was a foreman for the Penn-York Gas Co.
Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Mills church. Rev. M. M. Rines will officiate. Burial is at Mills.
