RICHARD LONG OF SALISBURY, MA & KINGTON, NH

First Generation

Richard Long*
was born abt 1659 in Newbury, Essex Co. MA and died 4 Sep 1694 in Salisbury, Essex Co. MA. He married 21 Jul 1680 in Salisbury, Essex Co, MA to Ann French, daughter of Joseph & Susanna (Stacy) French. She was born 10 Jan 1658/59 in Salisbury, Essex Co., MA. She was admitted to Salisbury Church 18 Dec 1687. He signed petition of 1680; both he and wife signed Bradbury petition 1692. The following year he bought the Sheldon farm in Scarborough (Black Point) from the widow Rebecca Sheldon; the farm was sold by his heirs in 1720. He was killed by Indians in Amesbury on his way to Haverhill, 4 September 1694 with Joseph Pike.[
He and Deputy Sheriff Joseph-3 Pike (1638-1694) "were slain by Indians as they traveled the head of the further end of Pond Plain..the enemy lay in a deserted house by the way, or in a clump of bushes or both."]. (Journal of Rev. John Pike, Essex. Collections); Inventory of his estate on 24 September 1794. James Brown of Salisbury was appointed guardian for three minor children. His widow Ann married 2d) in 1695/6 to Thomas Mudgett (of Salisbury) and was living in Hampton NH after 1713. Ann married 3d) Alexander Magoon of Kingston NH and was again widowed in 1731 at Exeter NH.

married Nathaniel Mason of Hampton, 12 Jan 1716 (Gen. Reg., v. 104 p. 40).

Sarah 2d LONG b: 13 Jan 1692/3 in Salisbury, MA.; baptized 2 April 1693 ; living in 1712.She married 28 Nov 1715 to William RUSSELL who entered a claim for the homestead on behalf of his wife and the other children of Richard Long Sr. Children include: Mary, b. Nov 1717 in Newbury MA; and Joseph, b. 15 Oct 1721 in Hampton Falls, Rockingham Co. NH who m. Abigail Towle. After Mary's death, William Russell remarried (1726) to Elizabeth Chase and had several children.


Second Generation

William-2 LONG (Richard-1), husbandman was born 25 June 1682 in Salisbury, Essex Co. MA; moved to Kingston, Rockingham Co. NH about 1705 and died 1753 in Kingston NH.. He married 1 Jan 1713/14 to Ruth Eastman (1687-1718), daughter of Samuel Eastman of Salisbury. He married 2d) December 21, 1719 to Sarah Shepard, daughter of Solomon Shepard. Sarah died in 1721. Sarah was born 25 June 1686 in Salisbury MA. William married 3) 11 Jan 1722 to Deborah Tongue, daughter of Stephen Tongue. Deborah was born in 1689 and survived William. William Long signed a bond on 30 April 1705 to resettle in Kingston NH and died there in 1753, appointing his son Ebenezer administrator of his estate.

Benjamin and Ruth moved to Chester NH after their marriage. Children (Severance) included: Joseph Severance, b. March 1746 in Kingston NH who m. Ann Currier.

Richard-2 LONG (Richard-1) was born: 3 Jan 1683/4 in Salisbury, MA; baptized 29 July 1688; living in 1712. He married 30 Dec 1717 to Sarah Coker of Newbury MA and was living in Salisbury MA in 1712.

Ebenezer-3 LONG (William-2, Richard-1) husbandman and miller; born 23 Oct 1727; died 2 Apr 1808 in Kingston NH; He married 12 March 1752 in Kingston NH to Anna Towle, daughter of Caleb & Rebecca (Prescott) Towle of Hauke and Hampton NH. Anna was born in 26 May 1729 in Kingston NH and died in 26 April 1796 in Kingston NH. [See NEHGS Register 100:254 for more on this line]

Caleb-4 Long (Ebenezer-3, William-2, Richard-1), b. abt 1764 prob. in Kingston NH. He m. March 18, 1808 to Mary Clark, daughter of Nathaniel Clark of Brentwood NH, and grand-daughter of Daniel-4 & Sarah (Swain) Clark of Hampton Falls NH. She was b. abt 1782/83 and d. 15 Oct 1865, aged 82 yrs 8 months. He died 23 Sep 1843, aged 79 years and 8 months. Both are buried in Kingston NH (same tombstone). [some info from book, "The Descendants of Nathaniel Clarke and his wife Elizabeth Somerby of... by George Kuhn Clarke"]. Jonathan Dean-6 Long, (Caleb-5, Ebenezer-4, Ebenezer-3, William-2, Richard-1) contractor, b 30 Jun3 1819 at Roxbury MA, d. 5 Feb 1889 Brookline MA. General Joseph Mansfield, killed at Antietam, August 1862, was instrumental in obtaining for him a government contract on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco in 1854, and on the death of the general, he gave his name to a son several months later. His diary of the trip to San Francisco over the Isthmus of Panama will be found in Vol. XCI, NHG Register, p 312; he married Brookline, 25 Nov 1846 to Mary H. Graduated Harvard University 1885, Newtown Baptist Theological Seminary 1888; had churches in Maine, Mass., Maryland and Washington D.C.; married 8 Oct 1888 at Washington D.C. to Eliza Carroll Snell (1868-1943), dau of Capt. Moses Porter and Mary C. (Hallock) Snell of North Brookfield, MA and Washington DC.

2. Maj. Hallock P. Long, b. 14 Sep 1891/92 in Canton ME. Attended Georgetown University in Washington DC, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1913, at the age of 21 years. Initially he was a law clerk with the food and drug activities of the Federal Govt, from which he resigned in 1915. In the same year he opened up his own practice. During WWI he served in the army, enlisting in July 1917, in Battery A., District of Columbia National Guard, being sent to Camp McClellan Alabama, where he was assigned to Battery A, 110th Field Artillery, US Army, 29th-or Blue and Gray-Division. From there he attended Officers' Training School and was commissioned June 1, 1918 a second lieutenant, National Army, at Camp Jackson, Columbia, SC. He completed the officer's course in the School of Fire for field artillery, and was assigned to the 54th Field Artillery Camp Travis, San Antonio, Texas, where he served until his discharge February 12, 1919. Then he resumed his legal practice, and had offices at No. 400 Fifth Street, Northwest in the Woodward Building. He was a member of the Reserve Officers' Association, Washington Canoe Club, American Legion, National Genealogy Society, Alden Kindred, Incorporated, and the Washington Chamber of Commerce. He was a communicant of the Baptist church, and lived at Hyattsville, Maryland. He was the author of several genealogy books including, "Alden-Snell-Long Ancestry," "A Long Genealogy," "Snell Genealogies," "Parentage of Anna Alden," and "The Virginia Snells." He died February 1965 in Washington D.C. He married in 12 Feb 1932 to Pauline Tisinger, [one source says Deisinger] dau of Joseph B. & Sarah C. (Bowman) Tisinger. She was born 1886 in Edinburg, Shenandoah Co, VA and d. 27 Feb 1953 in Washington DC. [bio from "Washington, past and present, a history," New York, Lewis Historical Pub Co, 1932, page 242-243. No children.

Fisher; Served in the USMC during WWI, honorable discharge 3/5/19, had been living at Hyattsville, Prince Georges Co. MD. They had a daughter Margaret Freas Long, b. 8 July 1926 who married in 1952 to Walton M. May, son of James May. Margaret graduated from American University and George Washington University and was a teacher. Walton May graduated from the American University, attended George Washington University and was employed by the FBI.
